For instance, the impacts of climate change are already driving people back into poverty and undermining growth and development across the globe. Beyond recognizing the potential devastating effects of climate change on the socio-economic and environmental development of the country and implications for the well-being of the populace, the government needs to strengthen its management capacity.

Through appropriate policy and institutional frameworks that will mainstream climate change into its development priorities and encourages implementation of mitigation and adaptation actions at all levels of governance for climate compatible sustainable development this could be achieved. No doubt, the country is already facing significant environmental degradation, including deforestation, soil erosion, and desertification.

However, efforts are in place by the government to ensure this global phenomenon is properly addressed. These include climate-focused policy research and various initiated mechanisms to protect Nigerians from climate change impacts. An example of such initiative is Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), a project focused on the restoration of 90 gully sites and the construction of close to 60 catchments to control erosion. Early Warning Systems were developed and implemented, as well as 103 automated weather and flood early-warning systems provide data for catchment planning, rainfall prediction, and flood monitoring for five River Basin Development Authorities.

Interestingly, “Storm water” diversion plans are in place to stop gully formation, manage flood risks in urban areas, and adapt to higher rainfall.

Since the start of the year, Nigeria has been experiencing prolonged period of extremely hot weather, typically accompanied by high humidity and minimal precipitation. The air temperatures have hit 41 degrees Celsius over the north and 39 degrees Celsius over the South with model projections indicating temperatures to remain high in the coming days.

The weather condition is already playing out as we witnessed delayed rains, energy sector crisis and attendant interrupted power supply as well as skyrocket price of fossil fuel that is making it almost unbearable to provide alternatives.

Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET) has been very proactive in its mandate in recent times; having consistently drawing the attention of both the government and her citizens alike to this matter by watching out for possible dehydration and likely accompany consequences. Experts noted that it was nothing short of the negative effects of global warming and climate change, where human activities are affecting the environment, causing the ozone layer to deplete quick and exposing the earth to direct ultra-violet rays.

At the Center for Environmental Sustainability and Development Awareness (CESDA), we envision a better and safer society that will guarantee sustainable development across Nigeria. The current heat wave in Nigeria is symptomatic of broader climate change and global warming trends. Nigeria, like many other countries of the world, is experiencing the impacts of climate change including extreme temperature, weather patterns and environmental degradation.

In line with the Centre goal, CESDA has been in the forefront of campaign for a sustainable environment by engaging stakeholders and influencing policies to promote good environmental practices among Nigerians and institutions alike.

So far, the Centre has carried out different activities, ranging from public sensitization to raise awareness among Nigerians on the implications of environmental practices that are detrimental to citizen’s overall wellbeing. Similarly, CESDA has also conducted perception index surveys on climate change to gain an in-depth knowledge on the societal implications and to provide latest and unique data on people’s knowledge and perception on the risks associated with climate change and level of their commitment to climate action.

We believe that collaborative efforts as stated above would go a long way in mitigating the impacts of climate change in the Nigeria. It is imperative to also mention that CESDA has kick started its virtual dialogues series targeting various themes on Climate Change.

The motive behind this conversation is to create awareness on environmental education and prioritize Climate Change against the erroneous belief in some quarters that climate change is an issue that plagues developed countries. The dialogue has attracted different experts and stakeholders across sectors of the economy to extensively discussed sundry issues around climate change and the environment while proffering far-reaching suggestions and recommendations on the way forward.

Finally, while we recognize the importance of sustainable development and safer environment, CESDA is open to collaborations with stakeholders to achieve shared goal and a brighter future for the nation.

Climate change is a complex environmental issue due of its long-term uncertain timeframe, scales of occurrence, differential impacts and vulnerabilities, as well as equity and justice within the global power lopsidedness.
